Amelia Jenks Bloomer was an early suffragist, editor, and social activist. Bloomer was also a fashion advocate who worked to change women’s clothing styles. Bloomer was born in Homer, New York. With only a few years of formal education, she started working as a teacher, educating students in her community. In 1840, she married David Bloomer and moved to Seneca Falls, New York. Dexter Chamberlain Bloomer was born in Aurora, New York in 1816. He married women's rights activist Amelia Jenks on April 15, 1840. They moved to Council Bluffs, Iowa in 1855, where Bloomer practiced law. Bloomer worked for the US Land Office and was active in civic and public affairs. He was president of the Council Bluffs Union League during the Civil War. Bloomer was an active Republican and served as mayor of Council Bluffs.
